It has been originally designed to perform fast cloud/cloud or cloud/mesh comparison on huge datasets such as those acquired by laser scanners). Afterwards, it has been extended to a more generic 3D data editing and processing software.

  I've been testing several commercial and open source packages to manipulate LIDAR and pointcloud data for GIS and terrain modeling including TopoGX, MeshLab, GRASS and several others that I won't mention. CloudCompare is without a doubt the best in terms of speed, intuitive controls and output options. The commercial solutions cost in excess of $300 USD and don't have a third of the functionality. I'm glad I stumbled across CloudCompare.

  Great software. Intuitive and easy to use. Fast, even running in VirtualBox. Good price too (free).
